How we got here
Keyfinder started in 2009 with four rental houses in the Coronado district and one rule: every owner gets a named manager who answers the phone. That was a reaction to what Renata Salcedo had seen working inside a large management company, where an owner could go six weeks without speaking to the same person twice.
The Valley has changed a great deal since then. Institutional buyers arrived, downtown filled with mid-rise supply, and rents moved in ways that made a lot of owners rich and a lot of renters anxious. Through all of it the thing owners actually complain about has not changed: they cannot get a straight answer from the person managing their asset.
We are now 26 people across three offices managing 1,240 doors, and we are still independent. We have turned down two acquisition offers, which is easy to say and was not easy to do. The reason is simple: every management company we have watched get acquired has come out the other side with a call centre and a maintenance mark-up.
Every management agreement is still signed off by the brokerStill independent
